Few topics are as important to the lives and well-being of individuals, firms, and states as the global institutions that govern them. And increasingly these institutions are situated at the global level. International institutions matter for economic growth and development, and are integrally connected to outcomes in areas as diverse as trade, finance, the environment and human rights.

This course introduces various theoretical approaches to the design of global institutions. How do institutions affect the behavior of individuals? What explains the choice between different institutional arrangements? How do institutional change? Do international institutions do what they are meant to do? Who are the winners and loser in global institutions and why?
